Fathers and Daughters

Growing up and later on I never could find just the right card for my dad our relationship was complicated, the sentiments were all wrong and way too sweet. Usually I settled on something funny or straightforward, if I forgot his birthday or fathers day which was most the time he never seemed to notice. His love is always there. We weren't close in the traditional sense but at times we talked on the phone for hours.
Time is a funny thing now I only remember the best of my dad and have forgotten all his faults. He was a tough old guy and would always protect me and loved me no matter what, we are part Shanty Irish and Jack Mormons and we were very dysfunctional. When I was small I thought we were the only people in the world that fought like us (glad to learn that I was wrong)...life has almost gone full circle and I'm the parent and grandparent.

Today we are having a big barbecue for Fathers Day and invited about 17 family and friends but one daughter is conspicuously absent with no card or call for way too many years, it is Peters daughter Lola. This independent girl that left home when she was 16 and never looked back. Now probably she thinks that it's been so long since she's spoken to her father that a call on Fathers Day would be lame or perhaps her life is too busy to even give dad a thought or maby she still pissed off...Get Over It! and give dad a call. I know he would appreciate it, even though he knows you love him and he loves you, there is nothing like reaching out and touching someone with a good heartfelt conversation. I don't want you to have any regrets later on. Even though you will not read this perhaps you will hear it Lola phone home.We love ya...

I am Irish, and after reading Angela's Ashes and all of Frank McCourt's books, I have decided it is the fate of all Irish to be dysfunctional..lol. At least now I understand why.
